The United States is in talks with Australia about establishing a US-funded military fuel reserve in Darwin.
The agreement came out of talks between the US and Australia in Washington, ABC Radio reported this morning.
Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds arrived in Washington on Monday, ahead of Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) talks with their US counterparts, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Mark Esper.
The fuel reserve would be established in Darwin to ensure US war machines are not left stranded if fuel supply lines are disrupted.
The talks also covered expanding military training exercises with the United States to include additional allies, and investigating the source of COVID-19 in China.
